Dr. George Murray Simmons
June 23, 1944 - December 28, 2021
Dr. George Murray Simmons, 77, of Kissimmee Florida and Murphy North Carolina stepped into Glory on December 28,2021 at 9:14am with his wife and children by his side. George was born on June 23,1944 to Kermit and Martha Simmons in Melbourne, Florida. He was the fourth of five boys. George was preceded in death by James (Jim) Simmons (2010) and is survived by John, Jerry, and Mark (Rusty) Simmons. George grew up in Eau Gallie, FL and graduated from Melbourne High School in 1962. He and Elta Lenea Anderson, grew up down the street from each other, fell in love, and on July 10,1965 they married. George and Elta remained the love of each other’s life and happily married for 56 years. They were blessed with two children, daughter, Britta Lenea Morrison and son, George Murray Simmons II. George is survived by four grandchildren, Britni Johnson, Courtney Winters, Luke Morrison, Thorsten Gunner (TG) Simmons and two great grandchildren, Syria and Xander Johnson. Nineteen days after marrying Elta, George left to serve his country in the Navy on the USS Forrestal as a Radarman Class “A”. During his four-year tenure he received two distinguished awards: National Defense Service Medal; and Viet-Nam Service Medal with one Bronze Star. After leaving the Military service George worked hard to provide for his family. He worked in various management and sales positions until he finally retired in 2009 after 17 years as a Logistics Manager for Walt Disney. To which he would glibly quip “Where else can you work and see teacups walking in the hallway?”. Retirement did not slow George down. He was active with hobbies and serving people. Among his hobbies, George, enjoyed scuba diving receiving his Master Diver, Wreck and Night Diving certifications. He relished white water rafting and mischievous antics with his brothers. He enjoyed watching Sci-Fi, old movies, writing stories, and listening to an eclectic range of music. George was known for his quick wit, word play, humility, and kindness. He never met a person he couldn’t chat with, and he rarely walked away from a conversation without saying something genuinely complimentary to you. Throughout his life George considered himself a “professional student”. His love for learning earned him 2 degrees from Brevard Community College, 1 degree from Rollins College and his most treasured Doctor of Theology from North Carolina College of Theology. George spent the better part of his life doing what he cherished most, learning, teaching, and writing about God and serving others. He spent months assisting with his brother, Jim, as he battled cancer and was instrumental in ushering him to Jesus. George jumped at any opportunity to teach at his Church and serve where needed. He was an avid writer and endlessly creative. His passion for his Lord and Savior was obvious and inspiring. George, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend, until we meet again, you are loved and will be missed. In lieu of flowers please consider a memorial contribution to the Wounded Warriors.
